🤯 99% of People have Terrible Resumes...

Yup, you heard me.

I've reviewed 100s of resumes.

<10% have been good.

<2% have been great.

Bad resumes lead to rejections. Great resumes lead to interviews.

There's too much resume advice out there...

So I did my best to give concise and actionable advice.

And if you haven't yet, steal my resume template here (used by 100s to get jobs at Microsoft, Amex, Deloitte, and other Fortune 500 firms)

By now you're dying to know...

What's a great resume even look like?

Let's dive in 👇

👊 Actionable Steps

Step 1: Write Details About Your Experiences

Here’s how:

  • List your work experiences

  • Write details (3-5 bullets on each)

  • Call out results, key skills and tools you used

Keep this information safe. You'll use it as your guide for your resume.

Step 2: Write the What, How, and Impact for Every Bullet

  • What you did (e.g., created a growth plan)

  • How you did it (e.g., by interviewing 10+ clients)

  • Quantitative impact (e.g., which increased sales by 10%)

Most people don't write impact. Without it, your resume will be generic.

Step 3: Make Your Resume Specific

Most people’s resumes are generic.

But, how do you get more specific?

Ask yourself:

  • What did I sell?

  • What tools did I use?

  • How many items did I sell?

  • Can I add any more detail?

  • How many people did I speak with?

  • What exactly did I do? (e.g., spoke with customers vs. spoke with 10+ software customers?

If your resume could be anyone's resume, it's not specific enough.

Step 4: Quantify Your Impact

Our eyes go straight to numbers.

You need to quantify:

  • Size (created [$3B] growth plan)

  • Results (increased sales [by 10%])

  • Actions (spoke with [100+] customers)

Recruiters use numbers to assess value.

No numbers = No value.

Read your resume right now.

Does it have numbers?

Step 5: Start Every Sentence with an Action Verb

Recruiters use verbs to assess your actions.

Here’s how to add them:

  • Start with this list of action verbs

  • Start every sentence with a strong verb

  • For example, change ‘helped’ to ‘created’, change ‘worked with’ to ‘led’

Use verbs to show ownership.

Weak verbs = weak resume.

Step 6: Integrate Keywords into Your Resume

Add key skills from the job you want into your experiences.

Here’s how:

  • Copy 10-15 job descriptions (from your target role) into resymatch.io

  • Add the most common keywords into your resume

If you don’t have the skill, create a project to learn it.

Step 7: Your Resume Bullets Need to be One-Two Lines

  • Eliminate filler words (e.g., ‘that’, ‘of’, or ‘up’)

  • Use simple words (e.g., change augment to add)

  • Use active voice (e.g., subject is performing action —> the team is managing stakeholders)

Long bullets = hard to read.

Bonus Tips

  • Read your resume out loud to improve flow

  • Don’t use abbreviations (before spelling out the word)

  • Keep the reader in mind (don’t use technical terms they won’t know)

  • Write down ongoing experiences & results (e.g., makes resume updates easy)

TL;DR:

  • Be Concise

  • Get Specific

  • Add Numbers

  • Use Action Verbs

  • Integrate Key Skills

  • Write your Experiences

  • Write the What, How, and Impact
